Local Services
The Mobile College of Wellbeing: During our counselling work, we realised many people would benefit from community training courses to help them to develop coping skills to deal with the issues that life brings, especially those with young families and those in extremis. We want to improve awareness and access to our counselling services and develop a Wellbeing Surgery comprising of no-cost short pre booked appointments and/or drop ins across the county. Below is an outline of our scoping project term + subsequent terms which we wish to base at village halls across the 4 areas of Pembrokeshire- North, South, East and West, but we cannot do this without funding.
The project delivered mobile wellbeing services across 4 areas of Pembrokeshire in order to improve awareness and access to the Adlerian counselling services. The project also piloted wellbeing surgeries comprising of no-cost short pre-booked appointments and/or drop-ins across the county.
The services improved mental wellbeing for participants as the subject matter included handling depression, bereavement, divorce, anger and all of which have an impact on emotional wellbeing. Encouragement is at the heart of the Adlerian teaching methodology which gives courage to participants in making positive changes in their lives. Improved social resilience. Feelings of equality which in turn deals with the issue of inferiority. Employment opportunities for those who have also taken up the opportunity to take part in volunteer counselling training. Improved social and interview skills.
“I found the ‘I can/I can’t‘ exercise so powerful. It taught me that how you speak or the beliefs you hold influence what you can or can’t do. I taught it my teenage son and already he is saying to himself “I can” as he faces his exams.”
The drop- in sessions did not go so well. Participants who had issues that they needed to discuss preferred to be referred to the counselling centre.
Participants found it beneficial to have time allocated at the end of the sessions to pick up on questions and comments that were more easily shared 1-1 with the tutor.
